Example: a 350-mile drive
A 350-mile one-way trip in a car rated 28 MPG uses 350 ÷ 28 = 12.5 gallons. At the EIA U.S. average of $4.331 per gallon that is 12.5 × $4.331 = $54.14, or about $0.155 per mile. Split between 2 people, each pays $27.07. As a round trip (700 miles) the gas costs $108.28.
How the cost is calculated
Gallons = miles ÷ MPG (miles × 2 for a round trip). Gas cost = gallons × price per gallon. Total = gas cost + tolls (tolls × 2 for a round trip). Per person = total ÷ people sharing.
The distance and drive time come from the driving route between your two places; you can also type the miles. MPG comes from EPA fuel economy data for the car you pick, or your own number.

FAQ
How does the calculator find the distance between two cities?
Enter a start and a destination and the calculator requests the driving route and uses its distance and drive time. If the route service is unavailable, enter the miles yourself and the cost is calculated the same way.
How do I calculate gas cost for a trip?
Divide the trip distance in miles by your car's MPG to get gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. Double the distance for a round trip. Example: 300 miles at 30 MPG is 10 gallons; at $4.00 per gallon that is $40.
Where does the MPG for my car come from?
From the U.S. EPA fuel economy data published on fueleconomy.gov: pick the year, make and model to use its combined MPG. You can always type your own MPG instead.
How many gallons of gas for 500 miles?
Gallons = 500 ÷ MPG. At 25 MPG that is 20 gallons, at 30 MPG about 16.7 gallons, at 40 MPG 12.5 gallons.
What is the average gas price right now?
The U.S. average retail price of regular gasoline was $4.331 per gallon for the week of Oct 12, 2026, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) weekly Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update. Local prices vary by state and station.
Is it cheaper to drive an EV or a gas car on a road trip?
It depends on your car's MPG, the EV's efficiency and what you pay per kWh. Home charging is usually priced near residential rates, while public fast charging often costs more per kWh. Use the EV vs gas calculator with your own numbers.
How much does it cost to charge an EV for 300 miles?
Cost = 300 × kWh per mile × price per kWh. Example: an EV using 30 kWh per 100 miles needs 90 kWh; at the EIA U.S. average residential price of $0.1831 per kWh (July 2026 (published Sep 24, 2026)) that is about $16.48.
How do I split gas money with friends?
Divide the total trip gas cost by the number of people sharing. Enter the number of people in the calculator to see each person's share.
